WHAT IS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY?

According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), “assistive devices and technologies are those whose primary purpose is to maintain or improve an individual’s functioning and independence to facilitate participation and to enhance overall well-being.”

“For most of us, technology makes things easier. For a person with a disability, it makes things possible.”
Judy Heumann, American Disability Rights Activist and Former Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs

KEY AREAS OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY ARE:

  • Control of computers/laptops/tablets/smartphones (and through them being able to use the internet)
  • Control of powered wheelchairs using adapted controls
  • Control of AAC devices (alternative and augmentative communication)
  • Control of smart home devices (e.g. being able to control your TV or music system, being able to open and close doors & curtains, being able to turn on and off lights)
